British and American people often say cheers to each other just before drinking an alcoholic drink.

I took Captain Imrie's chair, poured myself a small drink and said `Cheers!'

Some British people also say cheers instead of `thank you' or `goodbye'.

`Here you are.' —-`Oh, cheers. Thanks.'

`Thanks for ringing.' —-`OK, cheers.' —-`Bye bye.' —-`Cheers.'

'cheerio'
Cheerio is a more common way of saying goodbye. It is used mainly in British English.
